Florida Barbecued Country-Style Ribs

Ingredients:
1/4 cup vegetable oil , divided
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (6-ounce) can tomato paste
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon chili powder
4 whole cloves
1 bay leaf
3 drops hot sauce
5 pounds country-style pork ribs, cut into 6 serving-size pieces
1 tablespoon salt
Directions:
1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a medium saucepan; add onion and garlic. Cook over low heat until onion is tender.
2. Add next 12 ingredients, stirring well. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 1 hour. Remove whole cloves and bay leaf; discard. Set sauce aside.
3. Place ribs, 1 tablespoon salt, and water to cover in a large Dutch oven. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 30 minutes or until ribs are tender. Drain.
4. Place ribs on grill over slow coals. Grill 5 minutes on each side. Brush both sides of meat liberally with sauce; grill an additional 5 minutes on each side. Serve remaining sauce with ribs.
