Fresh figs are insipid on their own. In a fit of pique, I ruthlessly quartered fresh figs, threw them into a bowl and assaulted them with balsamic vinegar, a drizzle of honey and a pinch of salt. I would have attacked them with fresh ground pepper if someone hadn't spirited away my special blend of red, green, and black peppercorns. Read more . A handful of sliced blanched almonds and my fury was temporarily appeased. I could have tossed in some salty Bulgarian cheese, but I didn't feel like it that morning. Ingredients:
4-6 fresh figs per person |
1/4-1/3 cup cubed or crumbled bulgarit (or feta)cheese |
1/2 tsp balsamic vinegar |
drizzle of honey |
salt to taste (omit the salt if you use cheese.) |
fresh ground pepper (recommended: a blend of red, black, white and green peppercorns) to taste |
1/8-1/4 cup sliced blanched almonds |
you can vary the proportions to suit your taste |
Directions:
1. Quarter the figs. 2. Combine with vinegar, honey and salt (or salty cheese. Omit the salt if you use salty cheese). 3. Season with fresh ground pepper. 4. Top with the almonds. (Shouldn't take even 10 minutes!) |
