These bars are delicious! The meringue topping pushes them over the top. Recipe came from the back of a 5 pound bag of Imperial granulated sugar 40 years ago. Ingredients:
1 cup soft butter |
1/2 cup imperial brown sugar |
1/2 cup imperial graunulated sugar |
3 egg yolks |
1 tablespoon cold milk |
1 tablespoon vanilla |
2 cups sifted flour (before flour came sifted!) |
1/4 teaspoon salt |
1/4 teaspoon soda |
1 8-ounce package chocolate chips |
meringue topping |
3 egg whites |
1 cup imperial brown sugar |
1 cup chopped pecans |
Directions:
1. Cream shortening and Imperial Brown and Granulated Sugars 2. Add egg yolks and beat well 3. Add cold milk and vanilla alternately with sifted dry ingredients 4. Spread evenly in a well-greased 11 X 16 pan 5. Sprinkle with chocolate chips 6. Set aside and prepare meringue topping 7. MERINGUE TOPPING 8. Beat egg whites until stiff 9. Add Imperial Brown Sugar gradually 10. Fold chopped pecans in carefully 11. Spread meringue topping over prepared batter 12. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes 13. Allow to cool before cutting 14. Cut into 1 inch little bars |
