Mesir Wat - a red lentil dish I made for my Ethiopian dinner. I doubled the recipe. The ketsup ( instead of tomato paste ) just added a touch of sweetness to this fragrant delicious lentil dish. Lovely with garam masala and berbere spices indeed. Read more .A must try for those who love lentils. Ingredients:
1 cup dried red lentils ( soak at least an hour and rinse and drain ) |
1 onion, chopped |
1-3 cloves garlic, minced |
1 small can tomato paste ( i used ketsup instead ) |
2 cups vegetable broth or water |
1 tb paprika |
1 ts ground ginger |
1 ts turmeric |
1 ts garam masala |
1 tb berbere - see separate recipe i posted |
sea salt to taste |
ground black pepper to taste |
oil for frying |
Directions:
1. Soak lentils for at least an hour in water 2. Drain and rinse and set aside 3. Saute onions and garlic in oil until golden 4. Add broth or water 5. Add spices and tomato paste 6. When gently boiling, add lentils 7. Turn down heat and cover and simmer until lentils are tender and it's a thick stew consistency 8. Nice with rice and injera bread |
