I've been making this for holiday gifts for 30 years. No one ever seems to get tired of receiving it! Always a big hit and I'm constanly being asked for the recipe.
Ingredients:
2 cups butter
2 cups sugar
16 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
chopped walnuts (finely chopped)
Directions:
1. Melt butter in large saucepan.
2. Add sugar.
3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches 310 degrees on a candy thermometer. This usually take 20-30 minutes of constant stirring to prevent burning. Will go through several stages as it cooks. When it turns the color of brown sugar it is getting close to being done. Caution: Can burn easily as it nears the end, so keep stirring!
4. Pour onto 2 greased cookie sheets. (I use the butter left on the wrappers).
5. Alow to cool slightly so that surface is firm but still hot. Pour a quarter of the chocolate chips onto each piece and spread to cover once they have melted.
6. Sprinkle with nuts and press into chocolate so they don't all fall off.
7. Allow to cool and then flip over.
8. Melt remaining chocolate chips in microwave and spread on second side.
9. Sprinkle with more nuts.
10. Place in fridge to cool completely.
11. Break into pieces and store in covered container in fridge.
