A recipe found in my Grandmother Robert's scribble....let's see my Daddy just turned 85, so these twists have been in the family a long long time. Absolutly delicous and a joy to make. Ingredients:
1/2 cup of shortening |
3 tbsp of sugar |
1 1/2 teas of salt |
1 tsp of vanilla |
1/2 cup of scalded milk |
2 packages of dry yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water |
3 cups of sifted flour, divided |
3 eggs |
3/4 cups of chopped nuts |
1/2 cup of sugar |
1 generous teaspoon of cinnamon |
Directions:
1. Combine shortening, sugar, salt, vanilla, and scalded milk. 2. Add yeast mixture and mix well. 3. Blend in 1/2 of the flour (1 1/2 cups) and beat until just blended. 4. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes. 5. Add beaten eggs one at a time beating quite firmly after each addition. 6. Blend in the remaining 1 1/2 cups of flour, mix thoroughly. 7. Dough is quite soft. 8. Let rise in 80-90 degree temp in covered bowl for about 1/2 hour. 9. Combine, nuts, sugar and cinnamon. 10. Divide dough in small pieces with a tablespoon. 11. Roll each piece in sugar nut mixture. 12. Stretch and twist into 8 inch long pieces. 13. Place on a greased baking sheet. 14. Let rest for 10 minutes. 15. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 16. Bake 12-15 minutes. 17. Makes 24 18. Can be iced if desired. |
