I have been looking for a BBQ sauce recipe that is low sodium with sugar to taste. I added more molasses and brown sugar than I would have preferred, but the taste is worth it. There is no added salt. This is a combination to several recipes with a few added ingredients of my own. Easy to add or subtract your own touches. I used organic strained tomatoes from the natural foods store, but it is about the same consistence as commercial tomato sauce. Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups no-salt-added tomato sauce |
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar |
1/4 cup dijon mustard |
2 tablespoons molasses |
1/4 cup brown sugar |
1 tablespoon liquid smoke |
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped |
1 tablespoon lemon juice |
1 tablespoon smoked paprika |
1 tablespoon chili powder |
1 teaspoon garlic powder |
1 teaspoon hot sauce |
Directions:
1. Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer for about 15 minutes. 2. Cool and store in refrigerator. 3. Use to baste ribs, chicken, burgers or other meat or use as a dipping sauce. |
