This dish should be served as a side dish with a roast chicken or at a barbecue (in S A we call it a Braai). The spiciness can be adjusted to your taste by using less chili
Ingredients:
1 can of beans in tomato sauce
1 can of white beans (butter beans are good but it's up to you)
1 onion finely chopped
1 can chopped tomatoes
2 long red chillies (remove seeds) and chopped
1/2 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
3 cardoman pods
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbs crushed garlic
4 tbs of olive oil
4 tbs chopped coriander (cilantro)
Directions:
1. Open the can of white beans and drain well
2. Open the can of beans in tomato sauce
3. Open the can of tomatoes
4. Place the oil in a saucepan and put on a medium heat
5. Put in the ingredients marked * into the saucepan
6. When the mustard seeds start to to pop, add the onions, garlic and chillies
7. As the onions start to brown, add the chilli powder, and turmeric
8. Braise the chilli powder for about 2 to 3 minutes, stirring all the time (it must not catch on the saucepan)
9. Add the tomatoes and allow to cook for 3 to 5 minutes
10. Add beans, turn the heat down and cook for a further 15 mins - stir occassionally
11. Remove beans to a serving dish, sprinkle with chopped coriander
12. Can be refrigerated but tastes better hot or at room temperature for a barbecue side dish
