This recipe came out of a Maine cookbook that has been around for years. You will have three delicious loaves of bread. It makes nice sandwiches and toast. I have tried other white breads but keep going back to this one. Ingredients:
2 (1/4 ounce) packages dry yeast |
1/2 cup lukewarm water |
1 tablespoon sugar |
3 cups lukewarm water |
1/2 cup cooking oil |
1 egg (beaten) |
1/3 cup sugar |
1 tablespoon salt |
9 cups flour (approximately) |
Directions:
1. Using a large bowl, mix the first three ingredients together and allow to set for 10 minutes. 2. Add the remaining 3 cups water, oil, egg, sugar, and salt; mix well. 3. Then add 3 cups of the flour and mix well so the mixture will be smooth. 4. Then add 3 cups more of the flour, stirring again till smooth. 5. Keep on adding the flour until the dough is fairly stiff. 6. Knead 100 times. 7. Put into a greased bowl and cover to let rise till double. 8. Punch down and rise again till doubled in size. 9. Turn onto a lightly floured board and punch down and let rest for 10 minutes. 10. Knead for about 3 minutes and divide dough in thirds. 11. Make each third into a loaf and place in greased bread pan. 12. Rise till almost double. 13. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes; lower the heat to 325 degees and bake for about 25 minutes longer. 14. If they get too brown, put foil on top. 15. Take out of pans and put on racks with a clean dish towel over the top. |
