This recipe was taken from a cook book called Croton Centenial Cook Book. This was a cook book that my great grandma owned Ingredients:
1 cup white sugar |
1/4 cup shortening |
1 egg |
1/4 cup sour milk |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 cup flour |
2 tablespoons cocoa |
1 pinch salt |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
1/2 cup boiling water |
Directions:
1. Cream sugar, shortening; add egg and sour milk with soda dissolved in it; add flour and cocoa and salt, then add boiling water and the vanilla, mixture will be thick before adding the water last, makes a square cake or double the ingredients for a layer cake. 2. Bake at 350 degrees till soft to touch. |
