These were common during the depression in North America. My mother used to make these little treats occassionally when I was a kid, and I still can remember seeing them on the wax paper sheets cooling on the kitchen table. Ingredients:
2 cups white sugar |
4 tbsp cocoa |
8 tbsp water |
1 loaf unsliced stale bread (the staler, the better) |
shredded coconut |
Directions:
1. Boil and stir the first 3 ingredients for about 5 minutes. 2. Thickly slice the bread (about 1 inch) and remove the crusts 3. Cut each slice into 1 inch cubic fingers 4. Use a fork to dip each bread finger into the chocolate mixture. 5. Roll each finger in the coconut. 6. Place on waxed paper to cool. 7. You will not be able to tell it's bread, if you didn't know already. |
