From my Grandmother's recipe box. Ingredients:
1 cup all purpose flour |
1/4 cup sugar |
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon |
1/3 cup milk |
1/2 cup dry white wine |
3 eggs, lightly beaten |
1 lb cherries, ripe, firm, sweet with stems |
shortening (for deep frying) |
powdered sugar |
Directions:
1. Combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon. Stir in milk and wine until a smooth paste. Beat in the eggs. Let rest for 30 minutes. 2. Make a cluster of four or five cherries and tie stems with thread. 3. Dip each cluster into batter, making sure all the cherries are coated. 4. Carefully lower the clusters into hot, deep shortening. When browned, remove with a slotted spoon. Cook only a few clusters at a time. 5. Drain on an absorbent paper towel and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve at once. |
