Fried apples are a staple in polish cooking and this is an american version. Served by themselves or with sour cream (don't knock it til you try it). Addictive. Ingredients:
1 cup all purpose flour |
2 tbs cornstarch |
1/2 c plus 1 tablespoon sugar, divided |
1/2 tsp baking powder |
1/2 tsp salt |
1 c milk |
1 egg |
1/2 tsp cinnamon |
3 medium baking apples |
oil for frying |
Directions:
1. In medium mixing bowl mix flour, cornstarch, 1 tablespoon sugar, baking powder and salt. 2. In small bowl beat together milk and egg. 3. Gradually add to flour mixture, beating with fork until well blended. 4. Refrigerate for 1 hour. 5. In small bowl combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Set aside. 6. Peel and core apples. Cut crosswise into rings, 1/4-inch thick. 7. In deep fryer, heat 1-1/2 to 2 inches Butter Flavor Crisco to 375°F. 8. Dip apple slices in batter, allowing excess to drip back into bowl. 9. Fry a few at a time in hot oil for 3 to 5 minutes (don;t crown them or they will steam and not get crispy), or until golden brown turning frequently. 10. Drain on paper towels. 11. Dredge in cinnamon-sugar mixture. 12. Serve immediately or keep warm in 175°F oven. |
