I got this recipe from my friend Dave. He would bring it to work and it would disappear in an instant. I'm not a great baker, but if I want something quick, delicious, and not overly sweet, this is the recipe I turn to. The streusal topping is what sets it apart. It is nice served cold, but is even better when still warm and accompanied by ice cream or whipped cream. Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups sugar |
2 1/4 cups flour |
3/8 teaspoon salt |
3/4 teaspoon baking powder |
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda |
3/4 cup margarine or 3/4 cup butter |
3/4 cup milk |
2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped |
3/4 cup brown sugar |
3 tablespoons butter, softened |
3 teaspoons flour |
3 teaspoons cinnamon |
1/2 cup nuts, chopped (optional) |
Directions:
1. Mix the first 5 ingredient. 2. Add the margarine and milk. 3. Stir by hand or on low speed of mixmaster. 4. Fold in the apples. 5. Put the mixture into a 9 by 13 inch baking pan that has been buttered and floured. 6. Mix the remaining ingredients and sprinkle over the top of the batter. 7. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. 8. Serve with whipped cream or ice cre. |
