This was one of my mother's best recipes. One year at Christmas, I bought a few decorative loaf pans and baked the bread in it. I enclosed the recipe when I wrapped it and gave the bread in pan as a gift. Ingredients:
2 cups dates, stoned and quartered |
1 1/2 cups water, boiling |
1 cup sugar |
1 tablespoon butter, melted |
1 egg, beaten |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
2 3/4 cups flour |
2 teaspoons baking soda |
1 tablespoon vanilla |
1 cup walnuts, chopped |
Directions:
1. Pour boiling water over chopped dates and set aside. 2. Cream sugar and melted butter together. 3. Add egg and salt to butter/sugar mixture. 4. Sift together flour and baking soda. 5. Add flour mixture alternately with water drained from dates to the creamed mixture. 6. Fold in vanilla, nuts and dates. 7. Turn into a large greased loaf pan. 8. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. |
