A soft, moist, chewy cake with a distinct nut and date taste. It is a very old recipe that I got from my Mother-In-Law about 1960. One of my husbands favorites! Ingredients:
1 cup chopped nuts |
1 cup pitted and chopped dates |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
1 cup water |
1 tablespoon butter |
1 cup sugar |
1 pinch salt |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
1 1/4 cups flour |
1 teaspoon baking powder |
1 egg |
1/2 cup chopped nuts |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
3/4 cup sugar |
1/2 cup water |
1 tablespoon butter |
Directions:
1. Boil together first 5 ingredients. 2. Add the next 6 ingredients. 3. Mix together and pour into a greased 8 x 8 baking dish. 4. Bake in a 8x8 greased baking dish for 40 minute 5. In the meantime boil for 3 minutes the last 5 ingredients and pour over the warm baked cake and let cool. Serve with ice cream or whipping cream. |
