Tip: Cut dates with scissors or a knife coated with cooking spray.
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup chilled stick margarine, cut into small pieces
1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
1/2 cup 1% low-fat milk
3 tablespoons maple syrup
cooking spray
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°.
2. Combine first 5 ingredients in a bowl; cut in margarine with a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add dates; toss well. Combine milk and syrup. Add to flour mixture, stirring just until moist.
3. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface; knead 4 or 5 times. Pat dough into an 8-inch circle on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Cut dough into 12 wedges, cutting into, but not through, dough.
4. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until golden. Serve warm.
