Crusty Coconut Custard

My mother makes these and they are wonderful.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups coconut
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F
2. In a bowl, dump coconut and add milk to it, let set until coconut soaks up the milk.
3. Beat sugar and eggs together, then add vanilla.
4. Add coconut to the egg mixture. Bake for 30 minutes.
