This has been a traditional Christmas dish in our family for years Ingredients:
8 -10 onions |
16 -20 cloves, 2 per onion |
1 tablespoon unsalted butter |
1/8 teaspoon thyme |
1 bay leaf |
salt and pepper |
breadcrumbs |
grated cheese |
2 tablespoons unsalted butter |
2 tablespoons flour |
1 1/2 cups water (onion cooking water and milk to complete) |
Directions:
1. Stud each onion with 2 cloves. 2. Place in sauce pan. 3. Cover with water. 4. Add 1 tbsp unsalted butter, thyme, bay leaf, salt and pepper. 5. Boil for 1 hour and make sure the liquid has reduced to 1/2. 6. Prepare medium white sauce with the butter, flour and onion cooking liquid. 7. Pour the sauce over the drained onions. 8. Sprinkle with bread crumbs and grated cheese. 9. Brown in oven at 450 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. |
