I found this recipe in a cookbook used aboard the USS Missouri (you may want to scale it down a bit, this is the way it was written) Ingredients:
1 3/4 lbs dried beef, sliced |
15 cups warm whole milk |
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted |
1/2 cup shortening or 1/2 cup salad oil |
1/4 cup butter |
3/4 teaspoon black pepper |
Directions:
1. Separate dried beef slices. 2. Saute slices in shortening until edges begin to curl. 3. Set aside. 4. Heat milk until just below boiling. (DO NOT ALLOW TO BOIL!). 5. Combine butter with flour and pepper and add to milk. 6. Cook 5 minutes until thickened. 7. Add beef to sauce and blend well. 8. Serve over noodles or toast. |
