Classic Better Homes & Gardens recipe from 1943. It's delicious. Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour |
1 cup packed brown sugar |
1/3 cup butter |
1 teaspoon baking powder |
1/4 teaspoon baking soda |
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon |
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg |
1/2 cup buttermilk |
1 egg, beaten |
Directions:
1. In a mixing bowl, stir together flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs; set aside 1/2 cup of the crumb mixture to sprinkle over batter. 2. To remaining crumb mixture, add baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well. Add buttermilk and egg and mix well. 3. Pour into a greased 8x8 baking pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle with reserved crumb mixture. Bake in a 375° oven about 25 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Serve warm. |
