1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda |
1 2/3 cups cold water |
1/2 cup butter |
1 3/4 cups sugar |
1 teaspoon salt |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
1/2 cup cocoa |
2 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour |
3 egg whites |
cocoa frosting |
1/4 cup butter |
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar |
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla |
1/2 cup cocoa |
1/4 teaspoon salt |
1/3 cup milk |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F 2. 2 - 9 inch layer pans or one 9 X 13 inch pan 3. Grease & instead of flour, use cocoa! 4. Line with wax paper 5. Combine baking soda and 1/3 cup cold water; stir to dissolve and set aside. 6. Cream butter. 7. Gradually add 1 cup sugar and cream until fluffy 8. Blend in salt & vanilla 9. Mix cocoa with another 1/3 cup cold water 10. Beat into creamed mixture 11. Add flour alternately with remaining 3/4 cup sugar 12. Fold into batter 13. Add baking soda and water mixture; mix well 14. Pour into two 9 inch layer pans or one 9 x 13 inch pan 15. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. 16. Cool on racks and frost with Cocoa Frosting(see below) 17. FROSTING 18. Combine butter, sugar, vanilla, cocoa, salt & milk 19.
