These sweets are part of the candy tray known as the tray of togetherness, which brings good fortune. Ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar |
1/2 cup water |
3 cups walnut halves |
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger |
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon |
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom |
Directions:
1. In shallow Dutch oven, dissolve sugar in 1/2 cup (125 mL) water over medium-high heat. Add walnuts, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom; bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium; simmer, stirring often, until liquid is crystallized and nuts are coated, about 8 minutes. 2. Spread walnuts on rimmed baking sheet; bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 5 minutes. With wooden spoon, break up nuts; bake, stirring once, until completely dry, about 15 minutes. Let cool. (Make-ahead: Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.) 3 cups. 3.
