I was bored one day and tired of being let down by so many of these so-so sauces with ingredient lists as long as my arm....so I pulled out the crock pot and took it upon myself to create an italian masterpeice! Enjoy! Ingredients:
2 (28 ounce) cans crushed tomatoes |
1 (680 ml) bottle strained tomatoes |
water (enough to fill the bottle with when empty) |
1/2 large onion, finely chopped |
2 garlic cloves, minced |
1 teaspoon oregano |
1/4 teaspoon basil |
1/4 teaspoon thyme |
1/4 teaspoon pepper |
1/4 teaspoon salt (to taste) |
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes |
2 mild italian sausage |
1/2 cup red wine (any will do) |
2 teaspoons olive oil |
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese |
meatballs |
Directions:
1. Turn crockpot on low add both cans crushed tomato and the jar of strained tomatos, add water to jar, close and shake - dump water into both cans and stir to get all the leftover tomatos mixed into the water and then dump into crockpot. 2. Add the olive oil to the sauce and stir it well. 3. Fry your chopped onions and garlic(in olive oil) till tender and add to sauce. Add all spices and wine to sauce. 4. Fry your sausages in a pan with olive oil until done then slice them up and add them to the sauce. 5. Create the meatballs of your choice (Reference Authentic Italian Meatballs) and add them raw to the sauce. 6. Simmer on high or low for as long as it takes to let the flavors mingle (I do 1 hour on high and 3 hours on low). if you dont have a crock pot, a large saucepan on a cooktop will do the job. 7. Tip: add some pasta water (about 1/4 of a cup) while the pasta is nearly done cooking, its a great addition to the sauce! |
