From an old Gold Medal Flour recipe flyer; I'm thinking 1950s; must refrigerate dough overnight. Ingredients:
2 teaspoons yeast |
1 tablespoon sugar |
1/4 cup water |
3/4 cup milk, scalded |
1/4 cup shortening |
1 1/2 teaspoons salt |
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg |
1 teaspoon sage |
2 teaspoons caraway seeds |
1 egg |
3 cups flour |
Directions:
1. Proof yeast with sugar and water. 2. Melt shortening in warm milk; add salt, nutmeg, sage, caraway seeds. 3. Mix in egg when milk cools. 4. Add flour and yeast. 5. Beat vigorously; you may need to add 1/4 cup more flour. 6. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours; overnight is better. 7. Divide chilled dough into 3 dozen pencil like sticks, 8 inches long. 8. Place 1 apart on greased cookie sheet. 9. Let rise until doubled. 10. Bake 15 minutes in a 400 degree Fahrenheit oven until lightly browned. |
