Caramel Shortbread Squares

These are fabulous. This recipe goes back as far as I can remember. It is one my mother always made for us at Christmas and one that I now make for my Christmas trays. Enjoy
Ingredients:
2/3 cup butter softened
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1-1/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
1-1/4 cups milk chocolate chips
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350.
2. In medium bowl mix together butter, white sugar and flour until crumbly.
3. Press into square baking pan then bake 20 minutes.
4. In 2 quart saucepan combine 1/2 cup butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and condensed milk.
5. Bring to a boil then continue to boil 5 minutes.
6. Remove from heat and beat vigorously with wooden spoon for 3 minutes.
7. Pour over baked crust the cool until it begins to firm.
8. Melt chocolate and pour over caramel layer covering the layer completely.
9. Chill and cut into squares.
