There is just something about luscious, indulgent, yummy caramel that seems to me to be the right flavor for autumn. This country-style bread pudding with rich caramel flavor is a real winner: easy to make and yet so sweet and satisfying you'll find it hard to stop eating whether it's served hot or cold. Recipe appeared in the Arizona Republic, published by Jan D'artri. Ingredients:
6 slices day-old white bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes |
1 cup hot water |
1 cup brown sugar, packed |
4 eggs, lightly beaten |
2 cups milk, warmed |
1/4 cup sugar |
1 teaspoon vanilla extract |
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon |
1/8 teaspoon salt |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 8- x 8-inch baking dish. 2. Place bread cubes in prepared baking dish. Combine water and brown sugar and pour over bread. 3. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over bread. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes up clean. 5. Serve warm or cold. It's great with ice cream or whipped cream. |
