This is a recipe I purchased from the Donovan Estate in Heath, Texas in 1988. It is tried and true and a family favorite. Enjoy Ingredients:
2 sticks butter |
2 cups granulated sugar |
4 eggs |
1 large plain chocolate candy bar |
1/4 teaspoon baking soda |
1 cup buttermilk |
2-1/2 cups sifted flour |
2 teaspoons pure vanilla |
1/8 teaspoon salt |
1 cup finely chopped pecans |
frosting |
1/3 cup evaporated milk |
1 cup granulated sugar |
1 stick oleo |
1/2 cup chocolate chips |
Directions:
1. Cream butter and sugar then add eggs one at a time beating after each. 2. Melt candy bar in double boiler then add to egg mixture. 3. Add soda to buttermilk then fold in buttermilk alternatively with flour. 4. Stir in vanilla, salt and nuts then pour into greased floured tube pan. 5. Bake at 325 for 70 minutes then allow cool slightly before pouring frosting over top. 6. For frosting combine milk, sugar and oleo in saucepan and cook 2 minutes. 7. After mixture begins to bubble remove from heat and stir in chips then beat until melted. 8. Cool slightly then pour over warm cake. |
