Buttermilk gives these sugar cookies a tart, irresistible flavor. Ingredients:
2 cups sugar |
2 cups shortening |
4 eggs, beaten |
1 tablespoon vanilla extract |
2 cups buttermilk |
6 cups all-purpose flour |
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder |
2 teaspoons baking soda |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
1 16-oz. container butter cream frosting |
optional: colored sugar or sprinkles |
Directions:
1. Blend together sugar, shortening and eggs. Add vanilla and buttermilk. 2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into sugar mixture. Add more flour as needed to make a firm dough. 3. Chill for 2 to 3 hours or overnight. 4. On a floured surface, roll out dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out with cookie cutters; place on greased baking sheets. 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 7 to 8 minutes. Let cool. Frost and decorate as desired. |
