Buttermilk drop biscuits are denser than a regular biscuit but are fast to make and great as a morning treat or as a desert when covered with strawberries to make individual shortcakes. This was my grandmother's recipe for biscuits that had been passed down through the generations. Read more . I don't think it had ever been written down until I recorded it while getting a lesson on how to make them as a teenager.
Ingredients:
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil + 1 tsp
approx. 2 cups of self-rising flour
Directions:
1. Preheat over to 350 degrees and grease baking sheet.
2. Mix buttermilk and oil together in mixing bowl
3. Add 1 cup of flour and mix together completely
4. Add rest of flour in 1/4 cup increments until batter sticks together well and is only slightly sticky.
5. Using a tablespoon drop lumps of dough onto baking sheet. Batch should yield between 8 and 10 biscuits depending on desired size.
6. Brush uncooked biscuits with remaining oil and place in oven.
7. Cook for approx. 15 minutes or until browning slight on and toothpick comes out clean.
