I love to use buttermilk but it is so expensive. So, after some research... I started making my own. Measurements can vary. Use approximately 1 part buttermilk to 3 parts milk. Ingredients:
1 cup cultured buttermilk |
3 cups skim milk |
Directions:
1. Add buttermilk and milk to a clean glass quart jar. Cover. 2. Let sit in a warm place for about 14 hours; the time will vary depending on how warm your house is and it can take as long as 24 hours. 3. Check every few hours after the first 12 - 14. When buttermilk reaches a nice thick consistency, place in fridge to cool down and store. 4. From this culture you can continue to make your own continuous supply of buttermilk. |
