This is a quick rice sidedish for Indian meals. I often use plain basmati rice and that's great but this is a super combo making a nice change as well. The French Green Lentils are smaller than regular green lentils. Read more . They cook in a shorter time. You can find them in health food stores for sure. Ingredients:
1 cup french green lentils |
1 cup brown basmati rice |
water- see below |
1/2 tsp tumeric |
1 tsp salt |
1/2 tsp cayenne |
1 clove crushed garlic or 1/2 tsp garlic powder |
a cinnamon stick |
Directions:
1. Combine rice and lentils in a pot and rinse well. 2. Cover the mix with water. I learned this trick from one of Chinese students- put the third finger into the water and rice mix. When the water is at the level of the first knuckle, that's enough. It works every time. 3. Add the rest of the ingredients and you can soak it or start cooking right away. 4. Bring to boil, cover and simmer for about 1 hour. |
