Brood Met Appelen - Bread and Apples

A nifty, frugal way to use up stale bread. From the Michigan Dutch chapter of the United States Regional Cookbook, Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago, 1947.
Ingredients:
6 slices bread, cut into cubes
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup milk, hot
4 eggs, beaten
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup currants
1 cup apple, peeled and diced
brown sugar
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 300°F.
2. Fry bread in butter until toasted golden.
3. Add hot milk and let stand for 30 minutes.
4. Pour into a buttered baking dish; add eggs, salt, granulated sugar, cinnamon and fruits.
5. Sprinkle brown sugar on top.
6. Bake for 45 minutes.
