Brood Met Appelen - Bread and Apples |

A nifty, frugal way to use up stale bread. From the Michigan Dutch chapter of the United States Regional Cookbook, Culinary Arts Institute of Chicago, 1947. Ingredients:
6 slices bread, cut into cubes |
3 tablespoons butter |
1 cup milk, hot |
4 eggs, beaten |
1/8 teaspoon salt |
1/2 cup granulated sugar |
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon |
1 cup currants |
1 cup apple, peeled and diced |
brown sugar |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 300°F. 2. Fry bread in butter until toasted golden. 3. Add hot milk and let stand for 30 minutes. 4. Pour into a buttered baking dish; add eggs, salt, granulated sugar, cinnamon and fruits. 5. Sprinkle brown sugar on top. 6. Bake for 45 minutes. |
