This is my version of a recipe I found years ago in Southern Living. The sauce is unreal. Ingredients:
1 1-pound loaf french bread |
4 cups whole milk |
3 eggs-lightly beaten |
1 1/2 cups white sugar |
1 cup raisins |
2 tablespoons vanilla extract |
1/2 stick butter-melted |
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon |
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg |
whiskey sauce |
1/2 cup butter |
1 cup sugar |
1/2 cup half-and-half |
2 tablespoons whiskey-or to taste |
Directions:
1. Cut or tear bread into small pieces and place into a large mixing bowl. 2. Add milk and let soak for about 10 minutes. Mix with your hands until blended. 3. Add eggs, sugar, raisins, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix well. 4. Pour butter into a 9 x 13 x 2 glass baking dish. 5. Spoon bread mixture over butter. 6. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until firm. 7. Cool slightly. 8. Whiskey Sauce: 9. Combine butter, sugar, and half-and-half in a heavy saucepan. 10. Cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves. 11. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. 12. Stir in whiskey and serve over warm or cooled bread pudding. |
