Mom's favorite bread and butter pickle recipe. Momma was very careful to pick the same size pickles. This is the recipe she used when she taught me the basics of canning. Ingredients:
30 medium sized cucumbers (same diameter) |
8 medium sized onions |
2 large green peppers |
1/2 cup of salt |
5 cups of white vinegar |
5 cups of white sugar |
2 tbsp of mustard seed |
1 teaspoon of tumeric |
1 teaspoon of whole cloves |
Directions:
1. Slice cucumbers, onions and peppers. 2. Dissolve salt in ice water. 3. Pour over vegetable and let stand for three hours. 4. Drain. 5. Combine sugar, vinegar, water and spices. Bring up to a boil, but do not boil. 6. Pack the vegetables in the jars. 7. Add brining liquid. 8. Seal and process following canning instructions included with your jars. |
