Bird Wreath...great for Gifts or Decorating for the Holidays |

These make wonderful gifts, not only for the birds but the bird lovers. Hang the wreaths on the side of a tree, where they will attract woodpeckers and chickadees. You can find straw wreaths at craft stores.3 yards decorative ribbon 12-15 grain branches...you will need approximately 2 cups of small seed for small birds.. Ingredients:
2 cups beef suet |
1/2 cup peanut butter |
1 cup cornmeal |
Directions:
1. TOOLS or EQUIPMENT.
2. saute pan.
3. metal tongs.
4. large metal spoons.
5. 9x13 pan.
6. 1 to 2 wax-paper lined cookie sheets.
7. 3 6 1/2-inch straw wreaths.
8. 3 yards decorative ribbon.
9. 12-15 grain branches.
10. In a large saute pan, heat the suet over medium low heat until completely melted. Stir in the peanut butter and cornmeal.
11. It may be necessary to add a bit more cornmeal if mixture is too runny.
12. Remove from the heat and, with tongs, dip in one of the wreaths, covering the entire surface with the suet mixture.
13. Use a spoon to coat the inside.
14. Place the bird seed in a pan and roll the warm suet-covered wreath in the seed, completely covering the wreath, patting the seed on if necessary.
15. Place on the cookie sheet.Repeat with the remaining wreaths.
16. If the suet mixture begins to harden, reheat it slightly and continue dipping. Refrigerate the wreaths overnight.
17. Tie with bows and grain branches.
18. I save some of the grasses when I cut them back in the fall, and use them sometimes. Wheat stems look really great as well.
