These recipes I will be posting for awhile will be from Heritage of Cooking A Collection of Recipes from East Perry County, Missouri. Quote from one of the first pages. These recipes have been gathered from Old Saxon Lutheran family files, Descendants of Saxon immigrants, residents of Perry County and their friends. This was compiled by The Saxon Lutheran Memorial in Frohna, Missouri, maintained by The Concordia Historical Institute The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and printed in July 1965. This cookbook has so much history in it I wish you could read it for yourself. So you can get an idea of the time line here German Immigrants settled Perry County in 1839. Mom has written notes next to recipes that they were like the ones her mother (of German descent) made. So here I go with the first posting. In my opinion no self-respecting German immigrant would step off the boat without this recipe. :) This first recipes is by Mrs. Selma Hiller. Ingredients:
1 quart beer |
2 tablespoons flour |
1 tablespoon sugar |
cinnamon |
1 quart water |
4 eggs |
2 grated fresh lemon rind |
Directions:
1. Mix ingredients in cooking utensils. 2. Heat over strong heat until it boils. 3. Remove at once, add bread croutons and serve. 4. It states cooking utensils , in other words a soup pot. |
