My mom got this recipe 50 years ago from a church friend. She made them often when I was little, and when I have them now, they bring back fond memories of good old-fashioned treats. Takes some patience, but worth it. Read more . Cooking takes about 2 hours and a lot of stirring. Watch heat carefully!
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup butter
2 cups cream, divided
1/2 cup broken nuts, if desired
Directions:
1. Mix together sugar, corn syrup, butter, and 1 cup cream in heavy pan over heat.
2. As it heats, gradually add remaining cream.
3. Stir frequently as mixture begins to thicken. Cook to 254 degrees, or hard ball stage.
4. Pour into a buttered 8 square pan.
5. If nuts are used, sprinkle into bottom of pan before pouring.
6. When cold, cut into small squares. Makes about 5 dozen.
