I call this Hail Mary for two reasons. #1, it was during football season and #2, I was making it for a chili competition at work and had never used this particular combination of ingredients before...it was totally an experiment and I was just trusting that it would come together and be good. By gosh, it was ! I won second place out of about 10 entries. Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef (at least 10% fat for maximum flavor) |
1 lb ground hot sausage |
1 large green pepper, chopped |
1 large onion, chopped |
1 fresh jalapeno, minced |
3 fresh garlic cloves, minced |
1 (15 ounce) can black beans |
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans |
1 (28 ounce) can tomato puree |
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste |
3 cups water |
2 teaspoons cumin |
3 teaspoons chili powder |
1 teaspoon black pepper |
1/4 teaspoon salt |
1 teaspoon sugar |
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper |
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon |
Directions:
1. Brown meats, then combine all ingredients together and cook on stove (or slow cook in crock pot) until peppers & onions are soft and liquid has reduced to your preference. I like to cook it very slowly for a few hours, but you can cook it faster and it'll still be good. |
