Keema is an Indian-style ground meat dish made with either lamb or beef. The spiced beef mixture is thick and chili-like and is traditionally served with an Indian flatbread called naan. We've used store-bought pita bread as an easy-to-find alternative. Ingredients:
1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil |
1 cup chopped onion (about 3/4 small) |
3 garlic cloves, minced |
1/2 teaspoon minced peeled fresh ginger |
1 pound ground sirloin |
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cumin |
1 1/4 teaspoons ground coriander |
1/2 teaspoon salt |
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric |
1/4 teaspoon black pepper |
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon |
3/4 cup chopped plum tomato (2 medium) |
1/2 cup frozen green peas |
3 tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt |
1 (6-inch) whole wheat pita, cut into fourths |
4 lime wedges |
Directions:
1. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic, and ginger; sauté 4 minutes. Add beef; cook 8 minutes or until browned, stirring to crumble beef. (Drain, if necessary, and return beef mixture to pan.) 2. Stir in cumin and next 5 ingredients, and cook 1 minute over medium-high heat, stirring often. Stir in tomato, peas, and yogurt. Cook 4 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Serve with pita wedges and lime wedges. |
