Bartolino's Marinara Sauce

This is a recipe from Bartolino's restaurant. Serve over 8 ounces dried pasta, cooked according to package directions.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 (28 ounce) can tomatoes, cut up
1/4 cup dry red wine (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 cup snipped fresh basil
2 teaspoons sugar
Directions:
1. In a medium saucepan, cook onion and garlic in hot oil over medium heat until onion is tender.
2. Stir in undrained tomatoes, wine (if you like), salt, cayenne pepper and black pepper.
3. Bring to boiling; reduce heat.
4. Simmer, uncovered, 25 to 30 minutes or until desired consistency, stirring occasionally.
5. Stir in basil and sugar.
6. Cover; cook 5 minutes more.
7. Serve over pasta.
