I found this recipe in a cook book from the 1800 while trying to recreate my husband's grandmother's biscuits. DH say they are close enough for him. Ingredients:
2 cups sifted pastry flour |
1 teaspoon salt |
4 teaspoons baking powder |
1 tablespoon chilled shortening or 1 tablespoon butter |
3/4 cup milk |
Directions:
1. Into 2 cups of sifted pastry flour, sift and mix one level teaspoon of salt and four level teaspoons baking powder. 2. Chop in one level tablespoon chilled shortening or butter, wet to a stiff dough with about three-fourths cup milk or half water and half milk. 3. Toss out on a floured board, pat it down and roll one-half inch thick. Cut into small rounds and bake in a hot oven (450° F). |
