These disappear from the hors d'ouerves platter first of all at any party I give. An irresistible combination of salty/sweet, crisp/soft and you can vary the spices. Great with cocktails! Ingredients:
30 pitted whole dates |
30 thin slices bacon |
30 whole blanched almonds (optional) |
30 round toothpicks (may not be necessary) |
spice mixture 1 |
garlic salt - about a teaspoonful |
fresh-ground black pepper - about half that |
ground red pepper or milder paprika - a teaspoonful if paprika, otherwise half that |
spice mixture 2 |
onion salt - about a teaspoonful |
ground ginger - about a teaspoonful |
fresh-ground black pepper - half that |
Directions:
1. Stuff each date with an almond if using. 2. Choose your spice mixture and mix well in a flat pan or pie pan. 3. Coat each bacon strip on one side with spice mixture. 4. Roll bacon around date, spice mixture outwards. 5. Lay seam-side down on a plate as you make them. 6. When they are all wrapped, place carefully on a broiler pan. 7. If the bacon won't stay wrapped, use toothpicks to secure, but it's easier without them. 8. Broil about 6 from heat, watching carefully and turning, until browned and sizzling on all sides. 9. You can make them in a frying pan but they ted to burn more easily then, and don't get quite as crisp. 10. Serve warm and wait for raves. |
