Great as a snack and make a good dessert. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or tear corner and squirt inside with honey. Ingredients:
1 package dry yeast |
1/4 cup warm water |
4 cups all-purpose flour |
1 1/2 teaspoons salt |
1 teaspoon baking powder |
2 tablespoons sugar |
1 tablespoon shortening |
1 1/2 cups milk, scalded and cooled |
vegetable oil for frying |
powdered suagr (optional) |
honey (optional) |
Directions:
1. Dissolve yeast in warm water, let stand 5 minutes. 2. Combine dry ingredients, cut in shortening. 3. Make well in center of mixtur, add yeast mixture and milk, mixing well. (Dough will be sticky). 4. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead 15 to 20 times. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness, cut into 3 inch squares. 5. Heat 1/2 inch of oil in large skillet to about 370 degrees. 6. Gently place dough squares in oil a few at a time, lightly pressing down with spatula until dough starts to puff. 7. Turn and cook on other side unto barely golden, drain. 8. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or serve with honey. 9. Makes about 3 dozen 10. NOTE: When frying, leave a few in skillet while adding additional ones to absorb the heat so the oil won't overheat and smoke. |
