APPLE RAG ROLL This is a recipe I obtained from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Crawford Estate in Quinlan, Texas in 1982. Notation on card indicates this came from a military wife friend while they were stationed in Alexandria Virginia in 1957. Ingredients:
2 cups water |
1-1/2 cups granulated sugar |
6 medium tart apples sliced |
2 cups flour |
4 teaspoons baking powder |
1 teaspoon salt |
2 tablespoons water |
3 tablespoons butter |
1 egg |
1/2 cup milk |
sugar |
cinnamon |
Directions:
1. Make a syrup by boiling slowly the water and 1-1/2 cups sugar. 2. Sift and mix dry ingredients together then cut in butter and add lightly beaten egg and milk. 3. Pat dough to 1/2” thickness on lightly floured board. 4. Spread sliced apples on top of dough then sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. 5. Roll up mixture then cut off in slices. 6. Set slices in cooled syrup mixture in a shallow baking pan. 7. Bake in a moderate oven until lightly browned and dough springs back from touch. |
