Ingredients:
4 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced cooking apples |
2 cups sugar |
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon |
1/2 cup water |
2 cups all-purpose flour |
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder |
3/4 teaspoon salt |
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons shortening |
3/4 cup milk |
additional sugar |
1 tablespoon butter or margarine |
Directions:
1. Arrange apples evenly in a lightly greased 10- x 6- x 2-inch baking dish. Combine 2 cups sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over apples. Pour water over apples, and set aside. 2. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt; stir well. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle milk evenly over flour mixture, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. 3. Turn dough out onto a floured surface; knead 8 to 10 times. Roll dough to a 10- x 6-inch rectangle, and place on top of apples. Cut slits in dough to allow steam to escape. Sprinkle with additional sugar, and dot with butter. 4. Bake at 300° for 1 hour; remove from oven. Preheat broiling unit. Broil top crust 6 to 7 inches from heating element 3 minutes or until lightly browned. Spoon into individual serving bowls, and serve immediately. |
