An old recipe from the German side of the family. Very simple, no milk. Ingredients:
1/2 cup sugar |
1 egg |
1/2 cup water |
1/2 tsp vanilla |
1 cup flour |
1/4 tsp salt |
1 tsp baking powder |
3 firm apples, cored, peeled and sliced |
sugar and cinnamon for sprinkling |
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 and grease and flour an 8 x 8 inch pan. 2. Completely mix together sugar and egg, then whisk in water and vanilla. 3. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt and baking powder. Stir into the wet ingredients. 4. With a spatula, spread batter evenly into the prepared pan. 5. Place the apple slices in the batter on edge, about 3 nice rows. Sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon and bake for about 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. 6. Enjoy. |
