I am not going to say on the prep time. Ingredients:
2 c. sifted flour |
1 tsp. salt |
2/3. shortening |
1/3 c. cold water |
6 medium apples |
1 tsp. cinnamon |
1/4 tsp. nutmeg |
1 c. sugar |
4 tblsp. butter or margarine |
2 tblsp. lemon juice |
1 c. hot water |
Directions:
1. Combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening until about the size of small peas. 2. Add cold water, a little at a time, mixing with fork until particles form a ball when pressed together. 3. Roll out on lightly floured board 1/8 thick. Cut in 6 circles. 4. Peel and core apples; place 2 apart in greased casserole or 13 x 9 x 2 pan. 5. Combine cinnamon, nutmeg and 1/2 c. sugar. 6. Divide mixture and put in centers of apples. 7. Dot with 2 tblsp. butter. 8. Fit pastry circle over each apple, barely tucking it under. 9. Prick pastry in several places. 10. Bake in very hot oven 450 degrees F about 25 minutes. 11. Reduce heat to 350 degrees. Remove from oven. 12. Meanwhile, combine remaining 1/2 c. sugar, lemon juice and remaining 2 tblsp. butter; add hot water. 13. Simmer 5 minutes. 14. Pour over dumplings; return to oven at once and continue baking 15 minutes or until apples are tender. 15. Serve warm or cold with cream or vanilla ice cream. 16. Makes 6 servings. |
