Apple-Cranberry Dumplings |

from an old Amish cookbook Ingredients:
2 cups water |
2 cups sugar |
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon |
1/2 teaspoon clove |
1/2 cup butter |
2 cups flour |
1 teaspoon salt |
1 tablespoon baking powder |
2 tablespoons sugar |
1/2 cup shortening |
3/4 cup milk |
4 cups grated peeled apples |
1 cup cook cranberries or 1 cup whole berry cranberry sauce |
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped |
Directions:
1. Syrup: Combine the first 4 ingredients and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add butter. 2. Dough:. 3. Mix dry ingredients and cut in shortening. Gradually add milk,tossing to make a soft dough. Roll out on a floured board to form 12 x 18 inch rectangle. 4. To prepare:. 5. Spread the dough with the apples, cranberries and nuts. Roll up like a jelly roll and cut into 1 inch slices. Place in a 9 x 13 inch pan. Pour hot syrup over all and bake in a 425F oven for 40 minutes. 6. Serve warm. |
