250 g butter or margarine |
250 g of sugar or appropriate amt of an artificial sweetener |
1 packet vanilla sugar |
5 eggs |
150 g flour |
100 g cornstarch |
2 tsp baking powder |

1 kg apples |
marzipan, custard filling |
1 liter milk |
2 pkg vanilla pudding or custard powder |
75 g sugar |
3 egg yolks |
3 egg whites |
200 g marzipan |
coarse sugar for sprinkling |
Directions:
1. Beat butter or margarine with sugar in an electric mixer at high speed till well belnded. 2. Gradually mix in sugar and vanilla sugar 3. Add eggs one at a time till well blended 4. Combine flour, cornstarch and baking powder add to creamed mixture on medium spreed to form a dough 5. Grease a deep baking pan ( 30 x 40 cm ) and add the dough mixture, smoothing it into the pan 6. Peel, core and slice apples and place slices in a tile fashion over the dough in pan 7. Mix 6 Tbs of the milk with the custard powder, sugar and egg yolks and set aside. 8. Cut the marizan into small pieces 9. Bring milk plus the marizpan in a pot to a boil to dissolve the marzipan. 10. If marzipan does not dissolve easily, carefully place marzipan in a food processor to process smooth 11. When the milk boils, stir in reserved pudding powder mixture, and bring to a boil again. 12. Remove mixture from heat 13. Beat egg whites stiff and fold into the custard mixture. 14. Spread over the apples 15. Bake 180 C about 45 minutes or golden and cooked 16. Cool on a wire rack and sprinkle with coarse sugar 17. Cool completely prior to serving. 18. May be chilled 19. Refrigerate leftovers 20. Note: . 21. If desired use an additional 100 grams of mrzipan and mix with some flour and a little powdered sugar and form a dough. 22. Roll out between two sheets of waxed paper and cut out leaves or decorations to place on each pie of cake |
